Kazakhstan announced the results of exit polls at a referendum on amendments to the Constitution of the country, according to which more than 70% of Kazakhstanis voted “for”, reports Tengrinews.kz .

Thus, according to the exit poll of the research institute “Public Opinion”, 74.8% of the participants supported the amendments, 25.2% were against. The turnout was 70.1%.

According to the results of the exit poll of the Sotsis-A Institute for Comprehensive Social Research, “for” 76.7% voted, «against»— 23.3%. The turnout was 67.5%.

The results of the exit poll conducted by the “Institute of Democracy”: “for” 79.4% voted, «against»— 20.6%, and the turnout was 66.3%.

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev believed that voting on amendments to the Constitution would be a guarantee that the protests that took place in January would not be repeated.

He also expressed confidence that the amendments would change the “paradigm of relations between the state and society.” because “human rights come to the fore.”

In total, 33 amendments were put to the vote, which affect a third of the text of the Constitution of Kazakhstan. Amendments to the Constitution provide for restrictions on the President of Kazakhstan. In particular, one person cannot be elected to a post more than twice in a row, and for the duration of his term he is obliged to leave the party, and his relatives will not be able to hold leadership positions in state and quasi-state structures.

It is also proposed to change the order of parliamentary elections. A mixed system will be introduced: 30% of the deputies will be elected by the majority system, the rest— proportional.

In the judiciary, it is planned to create a Constitutional Court, establish an independent status of the Commissioner for Human Rights and prohibit the death penalty.

Another of the changes will be the removal of provisions on the legal status and powers of the former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev. He assured that he supported the amendments, since the Constitution should reflect changes in society.
